UV lamps are available in multiple lengths, ranging from 24 to 60-inches (60-145W,) and HVAC system designers typically overlap lamps in the plenum to reduce the number of sizes used and streamline replacements. The UV Resources RLM Xtreme fixtureless UV-C lamp system shown here, delivers high-output ultraviolet energy to irradiate coils and destroy mold, bacteria and microbes in demanding, high-volume HVAC environments. UV-C lamps are typically located 12-inches from a coil’s surface with irradiance calculated thusly. Using the industry accepted “cylindrical view factor model” (Kowalski et al., 2000), the resulting irradiance at 12-in is 1375 µW/cm2.
This appears higher than ASHRAEs 100 µW/cm2 recommendation until de-rations are considered. De-rating for 500 fpm air velocity and 55-deg F air temperature lowers lamp output by ~50 percent. Hence, the 1375 µW/cm2 output is de-rated to 688 µW/cm2 – at 12-inches from the coil surface, and lower elsewhere. (Image courtesy of UV Resources.)
